Revival of the Past

Jókai Mór Memorial Home offers a completely new, interior-like exhibition. This house is one of the few writers’ homes in Hungary that are open to visitors. Here you can have a glance into the everyday life of the Jókai family and can get a feeling of their social life. Jókai Mór wrote probably his most popular novel „Az Arany ember”(= The Man of Gold) in this villa that was built in 1870. He also wrote numerous short stories and magazine articles that were to make Lake Balaton better-known. On entering the villa the visitor can go back more than a hundred years in time and can see and feel Jókai’s own furniture and objects, can touch his desk where our renowned author used to write, and so can get closer to one of the great ages of Hungarian history.

Opening hours in 2011:

On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

In the Spirit of the Reform Era

The villa used to belong to the director of the spa. The exhibition shows the history of Balatonfüred in the Reform Era, arranged around these four topics: transport, spa, Anna Ball and theatre. This building houses The Local History Collection with a truly abundant  library and the Visitors’ Centre which is the starting point for different thematic paths. During organized trips visitors can see the Pantheon of Füred, can taste the famous acidulous spring water, and walking across the Indian Grove can have a rest in the Rose Garden. Afterwards they can go to Jókai Villa, see the Jókai Obelisk and visit Vaszary Villa, as well.
